Drawing on Mondrian

Homage to Mondrian by Cappellini, designed by Shiro Kuramata, is a clever design based on the abstract works of Dutch artist Piet Mondrian.

Although based on Neo-Plasticism these cabinets are in fact made of wood and matt lacquer. The blocks of colour in the original paintings are transformed into functional drawers divided by the characteristic solid black lines. Essentially, Kuramata has made Mondrian’s artworks three-dimensional, functional and a whole lot more accessible to the general public.

Don’t the paintings lend themselves so well to furniture design! What a clever interpretation of a classic piece of art.
