To Cinders

Ornamental concrete blocks have been around forever. I believe they were  in the height of popularity in the 1940’s before falling from their perch, to be looked down upon until today.

In this era of polished concrete, I feel it is time to re-kindle the love of the humble Cinder Block, and celebrate it’s diverse ornamental ability. Used correctly, they can create an elaborate feature wall, especially if you think creatively with colour, and look at them as a design feature rather than a simple building block. They divide space without entirely blocking it off and achieve a sense of privacy when used as a screen.

So how do you feel about them? Would you use decorative cinder blocks for your home?

I have seen a house with these used as a screen. The patterns from the sunlight are amazing. I would use them if it matched my home.

    • Oh I hadn’t considered the shadows! I think that makes me like them even more…

  2. Very cool when done right and such a strong feature. I love the first shot with the polished floor, might be an element we could utilise when the time comes to build our Eco-barnhouse, thanks for the inspiration!

my mother has these (3rd photo down) as a fence in Dee Why. They are great and certainly lasted (over 50 years) just difficult to paint.

    • They are definatley made to last a lifetime. A spray gun would make the job of painting a lot easier, I agree, painting the blocks with a brush could be quite a nightmare!

  4. How dare they photoshop my body onto the girl in the 2nd picture. Shame….shame. I love these concrete blocks too. Very cool. Especially the first design. Could also double as a climbing wall for the boys.

    • Rebecca, picture 2 is obviously a self portrait of moi, LOL! Love the idea of the cinder blocks as a climbing wall, BYO harness… And perhaps helmet!
